In my dictionary, there are so many码头( wharf, dock, hoverport, pier, shipside, jetty, quay) . I am often confused at which one to choose. Could somebody tell me what’s the difference between them? It’s truly a big question! If I just disembarked from passage liner, should the place I just landed on be called what (wharf? I guess.)? And should the place the goods from cargo ships are unloaded upon be called what?

: A ferry port is not a port for passenger ships, it is a port for ferries. Ferries can carry either cargo or passengers and often both. They are by definition commuter ships.

The English translation of the Chinese term 碼頭 used in Hong Kong is pier. Having never scene a 碼頭 close up in Hong Kong it is difficult for me to say, if it really is one.
When I think of a pier I think of a large dock that extends into the water perpinducular to the shore. In effect a pier is a special kind of dock for large ships. As already suggested a wharf is a docking area for cargo, not passenger ships.
When in doubt always use the work dock for a platform used to load and board, unload and disembark from a ship.

Thank you, friend Golden View. No particular context here. It's just a question long in my mind. I once wrote about seeing off a friend who took a ship from Shanghai to Dalian. Should the place from which people embark on ships be called ��port��? I have doubts about it. It sounds too ��big�� s. It should be translated as �ۿ�not ��ͷperhaps. Should the ʮ������ͷ of Shanghai be translated as Shiliupu Port? Another example, in Shanghai Port, should the place where many containers unloaded upon be called what? May ��ͷ be part of �ۿ�?
