Dislodging a fishbone stuck in the throat
This is from a novel that takes place in 1920s Shanghai, so perhaps this is language from that era. A character is telling about eating some fish and getting a fishbone stuck in her throat:
Thanks for any help!

attempt to vomit

heart was struck
1920s novel...have to be careful about contemporary terminology.
Discussion
Jennifer, what would striking the heart mean here? What would the person actually be doing?
