Para ensayos de sistemas de desinfección o similares contra el coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, se utilizan virus sustitutos de la misma familia que tienen resistencia similar pero que son muchísimo menos peligrosos, para evitar el riesgo de contaminar/enfermar innecesariamente a quienes hacen los ensayos, requerir instalaciones menos estrictas, etc.

Un ejemplo con el BCoV (coronavirus bovino):
