Today, we don’t even walk the few metres up the slope to have a close look at the ruin. A few of the party stroll the short distance to the waterfall, currently dry. Beautifully sculpted rocks, polished by water and just a few metres high, gleam in the sun and show where a cascade forms after heavy rain. No sign of water now, though. Back in the other direction along the rambla, Javi’s off. Pink-flowering oleanders add a dash of colour to the grey gravel of the dry riverbed, which curves round below a huge craggy face. The path squeezes through a rocky cleft, twisting steeply down. A few steps take us across the notch and we gain the almost level line of an old Moorish irrigation channel. It too is dry but provides easy going, albeit rather narrow in places, with a steep drop-off to the left. The valley below the rocky notch we have negotiated is widening out. The continuation of the rambla lies some way below, fringed on one side by tall pines.
