English term

'an abusive (text) message'

English to Dutch Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
It's a term used to describe text messages a person has sent to ex-wife. They are abusive in character. What would be a good Dutch equivalent? Thanks!

Beledigend (tekst)bericht

Het eerste dat in mij opkomt
Peer comment(s):

agree Kirsten Bodart : Or 'kwetsend', but it seems indeed to be translated this way most of the time.

"kwetsend" zou ook kunnen. Bedankt

Abusive referring to a message: dishonoring, slanderous and defamatory. A form of verbal violence to bring one’s reputation down.
Example sentence:

disagree Kirsten Bodart : laster is clearly something said to ruin someone's reputation vis-à-vis someone else (or the general public). An abusive text is just a message calling the recipient names.

English term (edited): an abusive (text) message

A Saudi Arabian man has been sentenced to 40 lashes for sending hundreds of abusive messages to his ex-wife on WhatsApp.

The court in the port city of Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia, also ruled that the woman has the right to attend her ex-husband's lashing session.

The former couple had been locked in a custody battle over their three children, during which the man sent more than 600 insulting and threatening texts to his ex.

The messages were described as 'obscene, offensive, derogatory, sexually explicit, insulting and slandering', according to Saudi Arabian news website Okaz.

They also reportedly included 'accusations about her presentation and morality'

This is far from the first time Saudi Arabian citizens have faced corporal punishment for sending insulting messages on WhatsApp.

Article Three of the Saudi Anti-Cyber Crime Law states that any person who commits 'defamation and infliction of damage upon others' using technological devices might have to face imprisonment for up to a year and a fine not exceeding 500,000 Saudi Riyal (£90,171).

Nine out of 10 hateful posts tracked in darkest corners of the internet targeted Ardern - new study

An online hate tracker found Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was the target of 93% of toxic posts against seven high profile politicians and officials, with a total of 5438 abusive messages.

Auckland University researchers analysed the darkest corners of the internet for posts mentioning Ardern and six unnamed politicians and bureaucrats, from 2019 to 2022.

Senior lecturer in politics and international relations, Chris Wilson, said Ardern was overwhelmingly the target both of all posts, and of those deemed hateful or toxic.

“The disparity surprised even me,” said Wilson, who is also the director of Hate and Extremism Insights Aotearoa. “The only conclusion you can draw is that it was just ongoing, incessant vitriol focussed on the PM, over a long period, that never went away.”

volgens mij zou

'agressieve / haatdragende berichten' (en varianten)

ook kunnen.

Abuse

- mishandeling
- aanranding
- beschimping

Dank je, Barend. Nuttig.
