non-emergency shutdown

Fail-safe shutdown/scram (system)
US website:
These reactors have fail-safe shutdown systems that monitor facility conditions, and before an unsafe condition occurs, control rods can be used to rapidly reduce the reactor power level. There are also redundant systems to shut down a reactor to provide added protection of the public.

US website:
All U.S. nuclear power plant reactor designs incorporate a fail-safe SCRAM* feature. Simply, the control rods are spring-loaded to the fully-inserted position, which instantly shuts down the nuclear reaction. In the absence of an operator command, electrical power failure will instantly drop the rods and shut down the reactor in about 4 seconds.
