Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Mar 17, 2002:
explanation by English language lecturer/native speaker I the best one is "Small is big."

"Large" has more of a physical size meaning. You see something in your mind
that is large in size: a large building, a large person (fat), a large
package.

"Big" has much for flexiblity. And often in advertising, you want to have
multiple possible meanings. "Big" can mean physical size, too, but also
"great, important, popular, successful, desirable". Big Ben (the famous
large clock), big business versus small business, a big music hit (selling a
lot of albums), the Oscars ceremony is a big event (a important event), a
big actor (someone who's very famous). A large actor would mean an actor who
is overweight.

neutral Elisabeth Ghysels : you don't really think that 'small is big' is a better motto than 'small is great', do you?

If you read carefully I wrote that this a LITERAL translation. Thank you.
disagree jmd (X) : I'd side with Elisabeth. "small is big" does not say anything of significance at all. But the original motto is not very attractive, either. In my opinion, Vesna Živčič has given an excellent example of what this should look like.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all of your for your answers and comments. I've made additional comment (twice, by mistake!) under my original question. 'Small Business Making Big Business' is also acceptable, but the original motto is short and simple, so should be the translation, as well. "

less is more

This "translation" is not appropriate for a motto about business, but it's a very common English expression about the value of using less (words, energy, time...) to make a bigger impact, to make a better impression.

Not even a literal translation, just a tidbit of information. I should follow this advice myself, zar ne?
