Hello, dear native English ProZers. I'm reading a Stephen King novel, and there is an expression which has left me wondering...

One woman is talking about a neighbor:
[As Pie Carver has been known to say: "There's a word for women like Marielle. It rhymes with the one for how you kick a football."]

Marielle is known around the neighborhood as a "tough bitch", and in the paragraph that precedes that sentence from Pie Carver, King describes Marielle's husband, who, by comparison, is a well-liked man, even though he's an alcoholic. King even describes the couple later in the book as "The Lush and the Bitch".

What I would like to know is the word that has been left unsaid, i.e., the word that rhymes with the one for how you kick a football. I'm thinking "pitch", but that's a wild guess :)

Thanks!!

Maria, it means vagina but it is really very rude. At least you know now.

And I think, is probably regarded as the single most offensive word in English, which is why I\'m not typing it out in full :-)

agree Nick Lingris : Definitely sounds more accurate than my guess. Charlie, you... // What do you know: next English question is about drilling.

...berk? :-) (from Cockney rhyming slang - Berkshire Hunt = the word in question) Interestingly, used to describe a stupid person, & not a thoroughly unpleasant person, as 'c***' is.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, Charlie and everyone else for your valuable input, and for the interesting links, and apologies for the "whorific experience", as Nick put it, and for the delay in grading. I find it very interesting to learn about a language/culture, even through (or maybe specially through) offensive words, as it is slang that actually shapes everyday language, don't you think? Have a happy Monday :)"

score - whore

Don't want to mislead any people here, but I think he's just giving an inaccurate definition for score.
