German term

& Co

German to English Bus/Financial IT (Information Technology)
"Google & Co"............."Facebook, Twitter & Co" etc.

This is for a company that specializes in search engine optimization. My first impulse is to just drop off the "& Co" as an idiosyncrasy of German, especially as searches mostly turn up German websites, but I thought it prudent to check just in case "Co" is some internet entity I haven't heard of before. I have never heard of Google or Twitter referred to as "Google and Company" or "Twitter and Company" in English before, so if that's all it is, I think I would just leave it out. Any thoughts?

:) Yep, I would most definitely include the intrusive full stop in this case; all the answers below are possibilities, depending on the register, I like et al too.

Or. John. Wayne Or. Ernest. Hemingway. While the British take their time like Dickens, or simply forget to stop
Glad we cleared that up Sir. Andrew. Enjoy. your. weekend.......
Lancashireman Dec 5, 2014:
I guess that's. because Americans talk. real staccato. like Al Pacino.
Ramey Rieger (X) Dec 5, 2014:
Well, Andrew that's an interesting little quirk. But whose?
Lancashireman Dec 5, 2014:
Ramey R. Rieger Could be something to do with your nationality, I suppose. Note how the (UK-based) asker writes her name.
Ramey Rieger (X) Dec 5, 2014:
Hi Andrew I would.
Lancashireman Dec 5, 2014:
Orla Would you really write it with that intrusive full stop in the middle of the sentence?
oa_xxx (X) Dec 4, 2014:
and co. is English, we use it all the time, e.g. Mary and co. are coming to dinner - 'and co.' meaning her 5 kids, husband, dog & whoever else is normally associated with Mary. I don't really get why anyone's trying to 'translate' it!! Unless it's an Irish thing? (but I doubt that!)
Ramey Rieger (X) Dec 4, 2014:
etc. would also work.
Elisabeth Moser Dec 4, 2014:
that's true
philgoddard Dec 4, 2014:
We do it in English too.
Elisabeth Moser Dec 4, 2014:
In German you write & Co often to say e.g. Google and others in this field (and other such companies) - it is just something like an idiomatic expression

You could also say "and company", "and others" or "and the like".

agree Michael Martin, MA : I have mostly seen "and company"//No problem. Always best to focus on what's relevant.

and so on, and the like

When we Germans list a few entities and then add "& Co" we mean "andd others like them", so "facebook, twitter & Co" would mean "facebook, twitter and other sociial media services like them", implying that the list is not limited to just those two. I might add "and other social media" or something along those lines.

et al.

The Latin works in English and German.

= and others
Peer comment(s):

disagree Nils Andersson : Et al usually means actual physical persons

Excuse me, but that's nonsense. Persons or parties. Could equally well be a newspaper, dictionary publisher, car manufacturer, pop group...
agree Lancashireman : But without the full stop. What is it about this site that induces contributors to place double quotes around everything and administer a terminal dot to all abbreviations?

I'm normally very careful with apostrophes etc., and the full stop here is not unusual// Oxford lists it with terminal dot, MW does not.
