Discussion

sumire (X) Sep 28, 2007:
Then it could be something like "Parenting a child with special needs", I think. http://specialchildren.about.com/
casey (asker) Sep 28, 2007:
Perhaps it is for parents with disabled children. The whole abstract is focused on the mothers, basically, so I can't really tell.
casey (asker) Sep 28, 2007:
The context is a study of troubled parent-child relationships where a 看護者 gets involved. It's just an abstract, so I don't really have details on the whole thing, but basically the 看護者 helps in child-rearing by providing advice and helping the mother by providing emotional and psychological support.
tokyo woman (X) Sep 28, 2007:
So, if the context is not like that, I imagine the word itself might be able to be originally English and translated in Japanese. I thought about the word "nursing care".
Anyway I believe we need the context to find out.
tokyo woman (X) Sep 28, 2007:
If the context isn't for the parents of disabled children or something like that, I feel a bit uncomfortable with 看護的子育て as Japanese word. Because 看護 is rather medical term for sick person and doesn't work as an adjective for general parental style.
Shannon Morales Sep 28, 2007:
Casey, can you give more context? Such as what other terms it is being compared to, for example? It could be something like "(baby)sitter-style child-raising" (as opposed to parental-style??), but it's hard to say w/o more info.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, everyone, for your input. I've been going over this abstract several times, and although there is no mention whatsoever of disabilities, I can't think of any other reason why the word 看護的 would be used, or why there would be a 看護者 involved. "Assisted parenting" is also very good, but the title of the abstract includes 支援, so I would have some problems with "assisted parenting assistance." I'm going to go with "special needs parenting." nannied

A child who doesn't need any special care is treated in the way that a sick child could be treated.
So I would suggest nannied. Over-protected is another possibility depending on context.
看護的子育てにより、子供の自立心が育ちにくいという問題がある。

child-rearing under observation

According to your explanation for the context, I understand the 看護者 is involved in the case especially for the mother, and help her situation.
Then it is the relationship between mother and child, which is the subject of help of 看護者.
I guess in that case it could be like that...

Hope it helps.
