At the turn of the twentieth century, art entered a new
era of artistic mass production. Whereas the previous age was an era of artistic mass consumption, in our present time the situation has changed, and there are two primary developments that have led to this change. The first is the emergence of new technical means for producing and distributing images, and the second is a shift in our understanding of art, a change in the rules we use for identifying what is and what is not art.
Let us begin with the second development. Today, we do not identify an artwork primarily as an object produced by the manual work of an individual artist in such a way that the traces of this work remain visible or, at least, identifiable in the body of the artwork itself. During the nineteenth century, painting and sculpture were seen as extensions of the artist’s body, as evoking the presence of this body even following the artist’s death. In this sense, artist’s work was not regarded as “alienated” work—in contrast to the alienated, industrial labor that does not presuppose any traceable connection between the producer’s body and the industrial product. Since at least Duchamp and his use of the readymade, this situation has changed drastically. And the main change lies not so much in the presentation of industrially produced objects as artworks, as in a new possibility that opened for the artist, to not only produce artworks in an alienated, quasi-industrial manner, but also to allow these artworks to maintain an appearance of being industrially produced. And it is here that artists as different as Andy Warhol and Donald Judd can serve as examples of post-Duchampian art. The direct connection between the body of the artist and the body of the artworks was severed. The artworks were no longer considered to maintain the warmth of the artist’s body, even when the artist’s own corpse became cold. On the contrary, the author (artist) was already proclaimed dead during his or her lifetime, and the “organic” character of the artwork was interpreted as an ideological illusion. As a consequence, while we assume the violent dismemberment of a living, organic body to be a crime, the fragmentation of an artwork that is already a corpse—or, even better, an industrially produced object or machine—does not constitute a crime; rather, it is welcome.

Al volgere del ventesimo secolo, l'arte è entrata in una nuova era di produzione artistica di massa. Mentre quella precedente era un'epoca di consumo artistico di massa, nel nostro tempo
la situazione è cambiata, e sono stati due sviluppi fondamentali a determinare questo cambiamento. Il primo è l'emergere di nuovi mezzi tecnici di produzione e diffusione delle immagini, e il secondo è un mutamento nel nostro modo di intendere l'arte, un cambiamento delle regole che usiamo per stabilire cosa è arte e cosa non lo è.
Partiamo dal secondo sviluppo. Al giorno d'oggi, non guardiamo ad un'opera d'arte prima di tutto come ad un oggetto prodotto dal lavoro manuale di un particolare artista in modo tale che le tracce di questo lavoro rimangano visibili o, quantomeno, riconoscibili nel corpo dell'opera d'arte medesima. Nel diciannovesimo secolo, la pittura e la scultura venivano viste come estensioni corporee dell'artista, come evocanti la presenza di questo corpo persino in seguito alla morte dell'artista. In questo senso, il lavoro dell'artista non veniva considerato lavoro “alienato” – contrariamente al lavoro industriale, alienato, il quale non presuppone alcuna connessione rintracciabile tra il corpo del produttore e il prodotto industriale. Almeno a partire da Duchamp e dal suo utilizzo del ready-made, la situazione è cambiata drasticamente. E il principale cambiamento risiede non tanto nella presentazione di oggetti di produzione industriale come opere d'arte, quanto nella nuova possibilità che si aprì per l'artista, non solo di produrre opere d'arte in maniera alienata, semi-industriale, ma anche di far sì che queste opere d'arte conservassero la parvenza di esser state prodotte in maniera industriale. Ed è in questo contesto che artisti tanto diversi come Andy Warhol e Donald Judd possono fungere da esempi di arte post-Duchampiana. La connessione diretta tra il corpo dell'artista e il corpo delle opere d'arte venne troncata. Si smise di credere che le opere d'arte conservassero il calore corporeo dell'artista, finanche quando il suo stesso cadavere diveniva freddo. Al contrario, l'autore (artista) era già dichiarato morto quando era in vita, e il carattere “organico” dell'opera d'arte veniva inteso come un'illusione ideologica. Pertanto, mentre lo smembramento violento di un corpo organico vivente viene considerato un crimine, la frammentazione di un'opera d'arte che è già un cadavere – o, meglio ancora, un oggetto o macchina di produzione industriale – non costituisce un crimine; anzi, viene accolta con favore.

La Città Municipale
Il nuovo programma edilizio romano si configura come un progetto di vasta portata che interessa tutta la città, dal restauro delle mura e delle porte urbiche, ad un nuovo assetto urbanistico e monumentale dell’area già precedentemente occupata da edifici pubblici che viene ampliata fino ad occupare tutta la parte centrale del colle.
Come nel resto dell’Italia romanizzata, la città diventa il luogo della rappresentazione del nuovo potere.
L’area pubblica occupa quattro isolati, delimitati a nord dall’asse di via S. Spirito, a sud da arcate e sostruzioni che sostengono la vera e propria piazza del foro, posta sull’ultima spianata rocciosa affacciata sulle ripide pendici sud del colle.
L’asse stradale centrale sembra dividere in due la città delimitando una parte superiore con edifici sacri e civili, caratterizzata dal permanere di edifici precedenti, ed una inferiore con il foro e nuovi edifici costruiti su precedenti strutture.
Lungo l’asse che corre sul crinale della collina, verso l’arce, con funzioni quasi di via sacra almeno dalle fasi di II sec. a. C., viene edificato un tempio a podio rivestito da ortostati su una cornice modanata , con fronte ad est, disposto su livellamenti di massicciate cementizie contenute da un poderoso muro a sud.
L’edificio per riunioni (bouleuterion), subisce un profondo cambiamento divenendo un’aula aperta verso la strada, mantenendo verosimilmente inalterate le funzioni.
Il macellum, il mercato pubblico per i commestibili, si configura sotto il profilo urbanistico come una struttura di collegamento tra gli edifici superiori ed il foro, e si distingue sia per la grandiosità dell’impianto sia per la rara presenza di due rotonde (tholoi), fondate su sostruzioni voltate, che trovano confronto solo nel macellum di Leptis Magna.
Si tratta di una piazza molto allungata, delimitata da botteghe nel settore ovest, e dalla strada a nord, addossata ai portici del foro a sud. Il dislivello tra la terrazza centrale e il foro viene superato con la costruzione di due sostruzioni in cementizio, a perimetro poligonale irregolare, con un pilastro centrale.
Sul lato est si addossano al podio del macellum un ambiente lungo e stretto, forse una strada coperta (via tecta), ed un’aula rettangolare, che le più recenti indagini hanno dimostrato essere parte dell’edificio termale di età augustea. Un lungo muro in opera quasi reticolata, addossato, a sud, alle sostruzioni, costituisce la parete di fondo del porticato che delimita il foro.
Il limite est del foro è segnato da potenti sostruzioni in cementizio conservate sotto l’isolato ad est di via Canali.
Un’aula pavimentata con un mosaico geometrico, a cassettoni con rosetta centrale, databile intorno nella seconda metà del I sec. a C., e una fontana pubblica lungo il lato del decumano chiudono la sequenza degli edifici pubblici ad est.

The Municipal City
The new Roman building programme is set up as a large-scale project covering the whole city, including the restoration of city walls and gates, as well as a new urban and monumental planning of the area previously occupied by public buildings, which is now expanded over the whole central part of the hill.
Just as in the rest of Romanized Italy, the city becomes the place where the new power is to be displayed.
The public area covers four blocks, bounded on the north by the axis of via S. Spirito, on the south by arches and substructures supporting the actual square of the forum, located on the rocky esplanade overlooking the steep southern slopes of the hill.
The central road axis seems to split the city in two, with an upper part, where the earlier buildings were left standing, bounded by sacred and civilian buildings, and a lower part with the forum and new buildings erected on old foundations.
Along the axis running from the crest of the hill to the summit, serving almost as a sacred street at least from the 2nd century BC phases, a podium temple is built, lined with orthostates on a moulded cornice, facing east, resting on levelling layers of ballast made from opus caementicium retained by a mighty wall on the south side.
The meeting hall (bouleuterion) undergoes a deep change, becoming a hall opened to the street, while arguably preserving its functions.
The macellum, the public market for comestibles, can be seen, in terms of urban planning, as a link structure between the upper buildings and the forum, standing out for its grandeur as well as for the uncommon presence of two rotundas (tholoi), raised on vaulted substructures, which has parallels only in the macellum of Leptis Magna.
It is a very elongated square, defined on its western side by shops, on its northern side by the road, abutting the porticoes of the forum on the south. The difference in level between the central terrace and the forum is overcome by the construction of two substructures in opus caementicium having the shape of an irregular polygon, with a central pillar.
On the eastern side, abutting the podium of the macellum, there are a long and narrow space, maybe a covered road (via tecta), and a rectangular hall which, based on the most recent investigations, has been proven to be part of the thermal building of Augustan age. A long wall in opus quasi reticulatum, abutting the substructures on the south, constitutes the back wall of the portico bordering the forum.
The eastern boundary of the forum is defined by powerful substructures in opus caementitium preserved underneath the block east of via Canali.
The sequence of public buildings on the east terminates with a hall paved with a geometric lacunar mosaic, with a central rosette, datable to the second half of the first century BC, and a public fountain along the side of decumanus.
