Source text - English The current concept of livestock production in Panama was introduced by the Spaniards at the beginning of the 16th Century; for this, they used the grasslands of the country’s Pacific slope, which were developed by the large indigenous population that was settled there through the very old practice of slashing and burning the forest that the used during the pre-Hispanic centuries.
It is known that, in the first part of the 17th Century, the extensive breeding of livestock was well developed in many parts of the country’s southern slope, and it constituted one of the most important prestigious economic goals of the Hispanic colonizers. These cultural goals and values were rooted in the population of the hinterland, and it has become in our time a major status factor.
The cultural and productive formation of the so-called “field culture” — which is the result of a long historic process which has included ranching activities — came from this. This has caused the activity to develop in Panama at the cost of exploiting significant forestry resources, thereby causing the degradation of the soil and the loss of valuable biodiversity in significant geographical regions of the country.
Translation - French Le concept actuel de production animale au Panama a été introduit par les Espagnols à l’orée du 16ème siècle ; pour ce faire, ils ont utilisé les prairies du versant Pacifique du pays, qui ont été développées par l'importante population autochtone qui s'y est établie à travers la très ancienne pratique d'abattage et de brûlage de la forêt utilisée pendant les siècles pré-hispaniques.
On sait qu’à la première moitié du 17ème, l’élevage extensif du bétail était bien développé dans de nombreuses parties du versant sud du pays, et qu’il constituait l’un des objectifs économiques prestigieux les plus importants des colonisateurs hispaniques. Ces objectifs et ces valeurs culturels étaient enracinés dans la population de l’arrière-pays, et sont devenus, à notre époque, un facteur de statut majeur.
C’est de là qu’est née la formation culturelle et productive de ce qui est appelé « la culture de terrain » — qui est le résultat d’un long processus historique incluant les — activités d’élevage. Cette culture de terrain a entraîné le développement de l'activité au Panama au détriment de l'exploitation d'importantes ressources forestières, provoquant ainsi la dégradation des sols et la perte d'une biodiversité exceptionnelle dans des régions géographiques importantes du pays.
