这里确实有把fragment译作“分裂”的：

同时看英文的解释，似乎有强调“比较小的碎片”；而中文中的“分裂”，感觉上似乎经常指“分成两大块”？

问题这一段中的fragmenting和fragment computing into，fragment都是动词；前面那一段fragmentary cycle中，fragmentary则是形容词。
如果中文希望保持一致的话，可以分别用“破碎”和“破碎的”
