I find it difficult to understand the sentence "they felt what we proposed was the right next step" in the passage below taken from a chapter about counseling.
Might there be something missing? Maybe it should be "they felt THAT what we proposed was the right next step" ?

As we will see, we were in the early stages of developing a capacity to let go of leading, of taking charge of the therapy in favor of supporting the other person’s inherent pathway and process toward health. This is not a passive stance, but one of active attention that was leading us to attune to what our people were bringing rather than formulating our own plan.
