This is regarding the re-opening of a historical Art-nouveau building in Oradea, following extensive restoration work.

"...restaurare început în 2018, derulat pe alocuri cu intervenții uneori prea incisive, ce i-au diminuat patina nobilă a timpului."

I am confused about the use of "patina" here.

It's the first time I come across this word, so I cannot say for sure, but I believe patina of time/patina timpului developed into an expression, where time doesn't have that much of a meaning anymore in either language. But to answer your question, I do believe that, in a way, "of time" emphasizes the fact that the process occurred gradually, over a longer period of time. Hope this helps.

I also found "patina" in the dictionary, on its own, so I believe it can be used independently, without using the addition "of time".

I think both "aging patina" and "patina of time" can be used interchangeably. I do not feel that there is a difference in meaning, though I cannot say for sure, it is the first time I encounter this expression.

Asker: Thank you. Does "time" mean that this is an effect that built up over time? (It could mean many things - "of time" means nothing here in English.

Asker: For example: "...which lessened the esteemed effect of its aging patina."

Asker: Patina is good The problem is "of time" - do you mean "ageing"? i.e. changed over time ?

Asker: Thank you - but we cannot say "patina of time" in English as it is not idiomatic. I will say "ageing patina", this is idiomatic and sounds more native (of time does not mean the same thing in English)
