Implode Sep 6, 2012

Gianni Pastore wrote:
We'll see if Windows can crack its way through, but I strongly doubt it.

So do I, but on the other hand, Windows does have a chance if the Android market implodes, and that's not unlikely. It's not only fragmentation of the various Google Android versions (as of today, a mere 1.2% of the Android smartphones run the latest version, only 12% the penultimate one) that matters, Android itself is fragmented, like in the case of Amazon and Baidu, for example. And nobody's going to stop the thieves from Korea to come up with their own version with their own "innovative" marketplace. In fact, I can hardly believe that hasn't happened yet. And Google can decide to stop the development of Android in that case, or in all other cases. They have a reputation to keep up in that respect.

Sony Ericsson Xperia pro Sep 6, 2012

I bought it some months ago and I'm very happy with it. The Qwertz/y keyboard is easy to use and it has Android, so you can basically install anything on it.

I'd stay it's important if you go for a high-end (= expensive) device you plan to keep for 3-4 years, because it must be very frustrating to find out you're left with a non-upgradable OS after a mere one year.

Does the device stop working after a year? Do all the apps refuse to operate?

Not really...

If you cannot upgrade, it means that you will lose out on some bells and whistles of the new version. It also means that a tiny fraction of new apps devised for the newer iteration might not work on your device. However, it happens rather rarely - more than 50% of all Android devices are still running the 2.3 (Gingerbread) version of the system - the current one is 4.1 - so alienating them would be simple a bad business move on the part of the app developers...

Smaller Galaxy models Sep 6, 2012

About two years ago, I went to my mobile network operator to change my plan and left with a cheaper plan and a free Galaxy smartphone. It's one of those mini models, but it's very handy and just fine for me. It has an outdated Android version now, but it works fine. I am not AFK for too long except when traveling and it works fine for answering e-mails and killing time. We've bought a newer Galaxy model for our son a few months ago, it was around 100 euro and I think it would do great to check e-mails and such, plus it has a plethora of features, I doubt anyone uses all of them. If you want something top of the line, the new Nexus smartphone will be out this fall and will feature the latest Android version.Collapse

Depends on what you really like Sep 7, 2012

Hi everybody,
I would like to ask your opinion about a good smartphone model, according to your experiences.
I actually have a Galaxy Tab (http://tinyurl.com/c38trqg) but I use it very little because is not very handy to take it everywhere I go. So I am considering about buying a smartphone, basically to check the emails from my three accounts.
For this reason, I don't need a super technological smartphone (like the iPhone or something like that), because my main concern is checking the emails.
So I would need a smartphone that is really fast in receiving and sending emails and that can write pretty fast, possibly switching rapidly from one T9 language to another.
Thank you very much for your input,
Bruno

If on top of checking mails you also send a lot of mails/sms, type something, and browse a lot then got for something with a big screen (4.3" and up). I'd buy a Galaxy Note II (and would sell the tablet you have), because it still fits in my pocket/backpack and the screen estate is more than enough for what i need without making me blind.

but if you don't need such an high tech solution you may want to have a look at the Sony Xperia V/Acro/Active. The reason for liking these is that they have an interesting price-quality ratio and they are all rugged phones. CPUs are dual core (so not latest stuff on the market) but they are nice. You can put them under 1mt of water (or take them for a hike or to the pool) and still be able to keep up with the incoming work. Their screen sizes vary so you may find what you need.

You can have a look here

As an alternative, an HTC One X or a Galaxy III but they are pretty expensive. At that price i'd take a Note II.

Nokia is coming up with the new Lumia 920, which is nice, recharges without wires and has a nice camera department (just in case). I like them, but W8 platform is not ready yet, although promising.

checking the emails Sep 7, 2012

well, I've gone through a lot of smart and not so very phones, including the iphones, the androids, the BBs, and others)))
and, keeping in mind that the TS wanted just to check emails, I would personally recommend only BlackBerry. namely, the 9800/10 Torch, or th 9700/80 Bold2. but: one needs a special data plan, called BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), in order to take advantage of all the BB's merits))-

Thank you everybody for your advices! Sep 8, 2012

After considering your proposals I have come up with the different conclusions, based on my personal preferences:

1) samsung galaxy note: you have all expressed wonderful opinions about it, but, unfortunately, there is a major drawback for me: I have seen it in a store and it is really too big for me. I am looking for something smaller. I know there are smaller galaxy models, but I really know nothing about them.

I am looking for something smaller. I know there are smaller galaxy models, but I really know nothing about them.

2) Nokia lumia serie: also for this brand I have read enthusiastic opinions. In this case, there are two drawbacks for me: first, the windows OS; I am a mac user and I don't know how much I could integrate this smartphone with my mac. Secondly, I don't like particularly the Nokia phone designs, they are too angular for me. I prefer a more rounded design.

3) I was firstly considering to buying a blackberry, but have read only few positive opinions about them. Moreover, the better models of blackberry have approximately the same price of the high tech android smartphones. So, why at the same price I should choose a blackberry?

4) Finally, and this is a thing that really impress me, I have not read a single recommendation of the iphone, which has more or less the same price of the galaxy note.
I think the iphone has better dimensions compared to the galaxy note: it is really more "handy". So, why nobody recommends it?

Thank you again for your help!
Bruno

And so am I. So why on earth did you ask the question? Buy an iPhone, but wait till after next week; you can probably pick up a 3GS or even a 4 for peanuts.

iCloud Sep 8, 2012

Move? No need to move a single e-mail. If you're a Mac like Bruno, iCloud will sync your e-mails (and your calendar, iWork files, bookmarks, and what have you) automatically. Other files you can access using DropBox (free), SkyDrive (free), and dozens of other apps. And using Connect My Mac (free), LogMeIn (free), and dozens of other apps, you can even work on your Mac using your iOS device. http://cafetran4mac.blogspot.com/2011/07/connect-my-mac.html

Cheers,

I tried an iPhone, but decided against it:
a) to small
b) lock-in into the Apple world. If you are running a Windows environment, it is extremly difficult to use the benefits of the iPhone (good integration into the Apple environment)
c) too expensive if you can't use all its benefits

If you are using a Mac, the iPhone should be the natural choice for you, it can be integrated into your infrastructure without any problems - but who wants to use a Mac anyway

I don't know how it works with a BB but in my Galaxy S (Android) and in my iPad (iOS), I don't need to move anything as I did for 5 - 10 years. With Dropbox, any single "Save" I do in any of my docs in my computer (in my Mac or in the Virtual Windows inside the Mac), is instantly saved also in my iPad + Galaxy.

I am also a "Mac" man but prefer Galaxy than iPhone...

While I agree with you BlackBerry OS isn't exactly the mobile OS of the future (ecosystem way too small), they do appear to have an app for Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/mobile

I was not talking about synchronizing e-mails... Sep 10, 2012

The BlackBerry does that automatically without the need of an app.

I know about iCloud and I even have Dropbox on my BlackBerry for a couple of things, but soon it was too small for me. I don´t want to pay for moving files into my phone as long as I have my old good USB cabel, nothing wrong or difficult with that. iCloud only offers 5 GB for free, Dropbox 2 GB. Besides: I was never able to count words on my iPhone while I was away from my office, maybe there is now an app for that too, I don´t know. But with BB I can certainly do that with an app. That, among other reasons, makes for me the BB the best smartphone for business, at least on my Windows environment. Maybe if I had a Mac I would think otherwise.
