Source text - English SIGHTS MANHATTAN – G REENWICH VILLAGE (NY)
CHUMLEY’S
i 86 Bedfort St., between Grove and Barrow St. S 1, 9 to Christopher St. Phone 212-675-4449. Open M-F
4 for drinks, 5 for dinner, Sa-Su noon for brunch, 5 for dinner.
Once the center of the Greenwich Village literary movement, this bar and restaurant became a speakeasy
in Prohibition days. Hundreds of authors, including the literary Johns (Dos Passos and Steinbeck), Ernest
Hemingway, William Faulkner, and J. D. Salinger have raised a glass here –and now jackets from their
books adorn the walls. The fascinating building –complete with original trap doors, secret elevators, and
hidden escape routes–has survived four fires. You can visit even if you’re not drinking here. Partly in
homage to its clandestine history, no sign indicates that this cream-colored building with a brown door is
a bar. If you manage to find the place, pick up a brochure written by Leland Chumley himself, and match
up on its amazing history.
ST. MARK’S PLACE
i Where 8th St. would be, between Cooper Sq. and Ave. A S 6 to Astor Pl.
In the 1960s, pot-smoking flower children and musicians filled this street. In the late 1970s, they gave way
to punks who hassled passersbys. The youths of the 60s and 70s now line the street as tattooed adults,
watching the steady stream of young East Village locals.
Present-day St. Mark’s Pl. is full of tiny ethnic eateries, street-level shops, and sidewalk vendors selling
trinkets of all kinds–from plastic bug-eye sunglasses ($5) to belly rings ($8). In a way, St. Mark’s
resembles a small-town Main Street–a small town with a bad-ass history. Unlike in most areas of the city,
people here know one another and sometimes help each other out. Although many more-obscure-than-
thou types now shun the increasingly commercialized and crowded areas of the street, St. Mark’s remains
a hub of East Village life.

Translation - Spanish MANHATTAN- GREENWICH VILLAGE (NY)
CHUMLEY´S
MILADY´S, 160 Prince St. (Teléfono 001-212-226-9069) esquina a la calle Thompson St. Línea de metro C y E a Sping St./Ave. of the Americas (Sexta Av.)

Cervezas 6$. Combinados de 9-12$. Jueves de 11.00h a 04.00h, V-S de 10.00h a 04.00h.
WELCOME TO THE JOHSON´S, 123 Rivington St. (Teléfono 001-212-420-9911), entre Essex y Norfolk St, líneas de metro F y V a Lower East Side/ Second Ave.
