English to Spanish: Hearing aid manual General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Source text - English If you think the hearing aid is not working because you cannot hear anything, make sure it is turned on and set the volume accordingly. Ensure the battery is fitted correctly or try a new one. Ensure that the battery is inserted properly or try with a new one. Check that the moulding is not covered in wax and, if it is, clean it with a soft dry brush. Ensure that the little tube is not kinked or twisted. Straighten it gently if necessary. If you notice some fluid build up inside the little tube, blow into it to shift the drops.
The whistling in the hearing aid can be caused as a result of excess wax in the external auditory meatus, in this case you would have to visit a Hearing Care Professional so they can examine your ear canal with a periscope. You might be advised to have an ear lavage.
The volume control might not be well adjusted. If you notice that the ear moulding is not fitted in properly, try to push it in applying gentle pressure.
If the moulding is cracked or doesn't fit in properly or the little tube has a small slit, please refer to the Audiology Department.
English to Spanish: Sexually Transmitted Diseases General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Source text - English Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have always affected humanity.
Having caused often more or less severe epidemics, they have been responsible for many deaths. STDs were and still are determining factors for chronic diseases in the different organisms, fertility, impotence and frigidity.
In the past, Syphilis tormented millions of human beings and was a symbol of life long disease or of inevitable death. Nowadays, even though Syphilis continues to cause chronic illness and death in many parts of the world, AIDS and Hepatitis B have become the most threatening STDs..
These are the STDs we treat here. We are only going to mention the most common and serious ones.
Clamydia
Albeit being less well known by the public, generally there are recorded, in the US alone, 3 and 4 million cases a year. It is a very dangerous disease, given that it often presents no symptoms, and as a result, can develop further if untreated: around 75% of women and 25% of men, experience no initial signs.
Gonorrhoea
One of the most frequently seen STIs, (commonly known as "clap") , it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in approximately 40% of people undergoing treatment. It can also cause infertility.
Hepatitis B
There is a vaccine, however there is no cure for the disease once established. It can cause liver cancer.
Herpes
It is painful and episodic. It can be treated, but there is no definitive cure and it tends to recur.
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
Around 33% of women infected by this virus develop cervical cancer. It can cause cancer of the penis in men, as well as severe pain and discomfort in the genital area.
Pubic lice
Transmitted by a specific type of louse (Phthirus pubis).
AIDS/HIV
Theses are the terms used to describe what has been labelled as "the disease of the century". Nowadays it is the sixth of the primary causes of death amongst American and European youths. The virus infection is currently fatal over a more or less lengthy period of time.
Syphilis
If left untreated, can lead to serious brain and heart lesions, or even death.

Experience
Years of experience: 14. Registered at ProZ.com: May 2016.
I have recently been given the opportunity to become registered with the NHS as an interpreter for the Bristol Royal Infirmary, which will allow me to pursue my chosen career, Public Sector Interpreter in the Health pathway, since I successfully carried out my exams a year ago.
I consider I have the ideal background to carry out the role of interpreter/translator; particularly given my 13-year experience in Nursing for the NHS and given that I have been a UK resident since 1993 after growing up in Spain. During the past 24 years I have become a fully integrated member of my community and have immersed myself in the British culture through my nursing career, volunteer experiences and other community involvement; I understand the nuances of the English language as well as a native. I therefore consider myself fully proficient in both Spanish and English, which was paramount to my success in the Public Service Interpreting exam. Based on my results and my long-term residency, I am confident I can provide the accuracy required for this role.
The skill set and human experience that my Nursing career has provided me is my best asset when faced with the challenges that Interpreting in the healthcare setting can bring. I have a highly professional manner and understand the importance of adhering to a code of conduct, respecting confidentiality at all times, and maintaining an impartial position whilst remaining empathetic. The level of responsibility that I held in my nursing career is also testimony of my ability to carry out particularly sensitive translating and interpreting tasks when they arise.
I believe my first hand experience in the various health care settings during my career, nursing training, and my volunteering experience have also given me a broad spectrum of understanding of the different settings and specialities I may be involved in as an interpreter in the medical field. I have also been able to participate in interpreting in different settings for friends/friend's relatives both in the Uk and in Spain and I have helped translate business websites for friends.
I would describe my personal attributes as naturally empathic, approachable and personable, whilst confident and professional at all times. I also take pride in my accuracy and attention to detail in my translating and interpreting skills, always ensuring it is as true to the original as possible.
I am very much looking forward to offering my services as an Interpreter and to develop further in the field as I feel I have the right educational and professional qualities to be able to contribute to your Interpreting requirements.
