Backup for loss of internet - personal hotspot?

For closure on this thread: I ended up buying a Broadband2Go USB connection from Virgin Mobile, which has a pay-as-you go, no-contract option. It was $50, and it works! That's all I can say about it so far, since thankfully, no emergency Internet outage has occurred since I installed it yesterday. (My techie son was not convinced that the cheaper dongles we found on E-Bay would do what I needed, and I really was not keen on buying a smart phone just for emergency backup.)
