Content of the workshop

The Barcelona workshop offers a wide selection of training material and resources, and is set up to be markedly different from the material taught in previous training sessions in the Americas.

Sessions will be taught with SI equipment in the hotel conference room.

The class materials consist of conferences in .mp3 and .mp4 files as well as exercises that have been designed for interpreters who would like to practice conferences in Spanish. A great deal of focus will be placed on understanding a wide range of accents using Spanish spoken in the Americas, which carry linguistic features akin to peninsular Spanish accents in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Mexico and Colombia, among others.

The teachers prepared the Barcelona SI training package in two formats: a hard copy and an eBook that touches on terminology, easily confused words, and many language and usage pitfalls that may come up with Spanish-speaking people.

An interactive eBook is embedded with lessons featuring multimedia courses, exercises, and glossaries.
Instructors

Classes will be taught by Martin Soriano and Florencia McDonough, authors and editors of Desafíos de la Interpretación Simultánea (Simultaneous Interpretation Challenges), a book of advanced Spanish interpreter-training material. Both teachers applied the necessary methodology to guide future Spanish interpreters with appropriate exercises to improve their listening skills and update and enrich their terminology.

Practical information

There will be an online video introduction to the course and material that students need to listen to before coming to Barcelona. Material will be uploaded a month in advance so participants can save time and gain maximum benefit from the face-to-face experience in Barcelona. http://aiic.net/page/6702/spanish-c-workshop-barcelona-28-july-1-august-2014/lang/1

Students will have the necessary equipment to train from Spanish and the eBook will be provided to all participants free of charge at the end of the course. The eBook glossary comes with a Spanish thesaurus so students can expand their conference vocabulary in Spanish.

After attending the training sessions, participants will need to complete a small number of follow-up activities in a timely manner relating to the content of the course, which will help reinforce the learning process.

Number of participants

The optimum number of participants is 15 to 20.

Cost of the workshop

EUR 880. for those who enroll before 31 March 2014.
Higher registration fees (EUR 980) may apply after 1 April
There are discounts for AIIC members and students that have attended previous courses.

Accommodations

We have negotiated reduced rates of EUR 130 with the NH Calderón hotel in Barcelona.

These two hotels are conveniently situated for buses to and from the airport. They are within walking distance of the waterfront via La Rambla and are literally two blocks away from the Plaça de Catalunya and four blocks from La Pedrera. Both hotels are located in central Barcelona, in an area that is generally considered to be the meeting place of the city center and the old 19th century Eixample district.
