Suddenly the old icons are gone and access to the blueboard has gone with them. Is this supposed to be an improvement?

You can find the Blue Board under the "Jobs & directories" tab in the navigation bar. You can find a discussion about the changes to the navigation bar at http://www.proz.com/topic/316760

Thank you Alejandro! Now that you've pointed me to (and I then clicked on) that unmarked box on the right, I've found the Blueboard. And a couple of other features I couldn't find.
