Another Dell Boy Apr 5, 2011

@ Alexandra
I used to call my first computer Dell Boy too
Now I have two other computers and they don't have names - I simply call them "my desktop" and "my laptop".

The beast... Apr 5, 2011

... I call my computer or my laptop bæstet - the beast when I'm annoyed with it. Usually in a wail for HELP from my husband who can sometimes tame it.

Otherwise it is my puter as opposed to his puter.

Actually he has three and I have two, and when not in use he puts the laptops in a safe place... or so he thinks.
Since the summer holiday two years ago, my flat screen has been locked to the desk with a bicycle chain and we can't find the key. ... See more

Since the summer holiday two years ago, my flat screen has been locked to the desk with a bicycle chain and we can't find the key.

So occasionally, when I need two screens or plan to run two jobs in parallel, the laptop is 'the one you've hidden so everyone can find it except me, you paranoid maniac' (well, that's the polite way of spelling it ...)

Maybe we should find some names for the things, because goodness knows they have minds of their own on occasion!

My brother once worked for a firm where it was necessary to distinguish servers - and in one branch they were called Tom and Jerry.
There was wild confusion when another branch copied the idea, until they were persuaded to re-name the second pair Asterix and Obelix.

I think really I should be careful about calling my computer names. I don't want to upset it!
On the whole it has served me well for several years, and I dread the day when I will have to replace it and start all the hassle of configuring the things I never even knew I had altered... Not to mention learning to use a new version of Word!

several Apr 5, 2011

I guess my pcs have several names, none of them is good, apart maybe from "baby" which is the way I called them when I'm really desperate and they keep not working.... the rest are all the bad words I can imagine everytime they have problems....;-)

I used to call my first computer... Apr 5, 2011

...Silly Billy, as it never did what I wanted it to, playing games all time, so to speak. Those days, I didn't see it was actually me making it behave funny

My laptop is called Schleppi

It hadn't occurred to me to name it Apr 5, 2011

Although if I did, it wouldn't be printable. I have on many occasions, however, promised to employ Beckham-like tactics to escort it through the window, post haste. The speed of the thing drives me to distraction.

Functional names Apr 5, 2011

My old laptop was called The Hairdryer.

The Macbook Pro I got to replace it is called The Silver Goddess.

I think you can work out the rationale for both...

Yes, though partially unintenionally Apr 5, 2011

My desktop is named for the one who gave it to me brandnew: Olly.

I never thought about naming my laptop, but... one day I sorted out tons of "souvenirs" and came across a sticker I had bought years ago in Wyoming. That day I thought it a good idea to just stick it on my laptop's case. So now it's called: Cheyenne, named for the state capital of Wyoming. ...

The entire sticker reads: "Cheyenne, live the legend".

That's my name-giving story, and I'm sticking to it.

I do that, too. And these names/grumblings/mumblings etc. are not printable here. Especially not when my laptop crashed during a conversation with a client and only minutes after I've started that project. grrrrrrrrrrr is the only printable version of what I called my laptop.
