The kinds of texts I translate are not supposed to be funny, but once in a while texts are so badly written that I have to burst out laughing… | | | Aline Amorim Brazil Local time: 16:13 English to Portuguese + ... The one I'm working on now | Oct 20, 2020 |
During the last few months I've been working on a new project with XXXXX at the moment. I'm collecting images for a data collection project. They help train AI and machine learning. I'm lucky and cautious enough to only work with things that I like or understand, so a job is never boring in a way that I don't spend time scratching my head and thinking "Just what on Earth is this?". Currently, I'm working with lots of games on a regular-basis and enjoying a lot. I love this area because you can express yourself in a creative way. I always play them, if they're immediately available to me, to get the hang of it and have some fun too. Finding a way to localise the content while still keeping things fun and engaging for the player is a challenge I love to tackle. On the other hand, I enjoy the technical stuff, even though there's mostly no room for creativity, just because I love to see how machines work and how smart the people that designed them are. One of the most interesting projects I remember involved maritime technology against pirates attacks (real pirates, not Johnny Depp coming at you with a smartphone) about 10 years ago. Couldn't think of a better conversion starter at a bar. ▲ Collapse

Some jobs are more fun than others, but I don't really think about work in terms of "fun". Interesting, useful, intellectually stimulating, yes, but "fun"? Nah, that's not what work is for. I'm old-fashioned like that. | | | Since when... | Oct 20, 2020 |

I don't find the texts I translate funny, but rather interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes, I get a more boring text, but I always try to look for some pleasure and joy in it. I don't get tired of doing something I love. | | | Johannah Morrison United Kingdom Local time: 20:13 Member (2017) Portuguese to English + ... It's been a while! | Oct 20, 2020 |
Can't say that I consider any of my recent projects 'fun', but I did come across some amusing CVs in my early days of translating. 95% of them had 'fluent in written and spoken English' as one of their main skills (the translations were into EN). There were lots of unusual inclusions too, for example - 'in my spare time, I like to visit my grandmother'. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 21:13 Member (2009) English to German + ... It was a very funny children's story. During the job I did smile often, even laughed at times. | | | Kaisa I Canada Local time: 15:13 English to Finnish + ... Just a thought | Oct 20, 2020 |

I don't know, maybe this person was applying for a job in geriatrics? A personal support worker, perhaps? In subtitling, I sometimes come across comedies, which can be fun, or funny, but mostly they're just an added challenge. Jokes are one of the hardest things to convey in another language.

I enjoy this work and consider most of my texts fun and interesting. I'm lucky enough to be able to work only on enjoyable material. | | | applying to nice comedy script | Oct 20, 2020 |
I remember sometime ago I applied for a job for a script of a romantic soap opera, I read some lines from the sample translation and it was so funny!!! What a pity I didn't get that job!! | | | My Book Translation, "The House of Good Intentions" | Oct 20, 2020 |
I created that one more than a few years ago, but within the last decade. When I was finished with it, I told the original author that it was the most entertaining, and really the best book I have ever translated. Lots of different characters, whether they were innocent and credulous, or seemingly sophisticated but very unethical in their behaviors. I often found myself laughing while translating some of the excerpts. But at the same time, it addressed some very serious social issues.
