Dear members,

A new profile format--which has been in beta testing for one month--will be available for use in a few minutes. The new format is accessible via a new URL, while the current format remains accessible through the current URL.

Dear members,

A new profile format--which has been in beta testing for one month--will be available for use in a few minutes. The new format is accessible via a new URL, while the current format remains accessible through the current URL.

In stages, beginning at the end of next week, the new URL will be made the default throughout the site. In the meantime, you are urged to configure your own new profile to your satisfaction. Once you are satisfied with it, even if it is before the end of next week, you can:
1. Give the new URL out to clients and colleagues.
2. Put it in use throughout the site immediately by making it appear at the old URL (in other words, you don't have to wait for our rollout, you can configure things so that your profile appears in the new format now.)

To see your profile in the new format, go to: http://www.proz.com/profile/ {your user ID}
This is the URL you can give to others to send them to your new profile.

If you do not know your user ID, go to: http://www.proz.com/profile (You must be logged in.)

What is improved

In addition to being more attractive and better organized overall, the new profiles boast a number of new features, including:

* An availability calendar. You can indicate your availability to clients and colleagues over the next 6 months.

* Standardized and personalized modes. This provides flexibility to the profile owner in presenting him/herself, and at the same time, allows those viewing profiles to have a uniform experience when they need it.

* Ability to add custom tabs. Members may add up to 3 custom tabs to their profiles, with any content they wish to include. For example, members have already added tabs for ***, ***, ***, etc.

* Localization of content. It is now possible to localize your profile, including the "about me", "user message", "tagline", and "keywords" sections. This will help you appeal to a broader range of potential customers and collaborators, as well as search engines. (Note that the profile labels have not yet been localized; they will be soon.)

* Colleague crosslinking. It is now possible to add links from your profile to other ProZ.com members. Consider exchanging links with someone who works in a mirror pair, etc., as this will increase traffic to both of your profiles. (Note that when a search engine visitor visits a non-member profile, if no crosslinks have been entered, crosslinks to members are generated automatically. This is a means of further promoting member services and encouraging membership.)

* An aggregate 'Settings' tab. This tab, combining several editing pages, makes the process of keeping your profile up to date more convenient. Also, a profile completeness score (visible only to you) is shown for your convenience.

* KudoZ & Project History "modules". These can be included, optionally, in the personalized area of your profile. This possibility provides flexibility and continuity with the old profile format.

* More powerful options for search engine optimization. It is now possible to specify your preferred title and other meta tags, thereby influencing the position of your profile in Google and other search engines. A link is provided from the new profile to more information--because search engine traffic is a powerful way of meeting new clients, all site users are strongly advised to read up and configure their profile pages for greatest advantage.

Google Talk was added as an instant messenger type (by request). Visitors to your profile are now able to contact you by Skype, Google Talk, Yahoo IM, etc.

Member feedback

In a "Quick Poll" taken in the middle of the beta improvement period, two-thirds of members rated the new profile format "good" or "great". Member Viktoria Gimbe - http://www.proz.com/profile/49591 - writes:

"Good job! Several features were added that I find amazing. The availability feature is great! I also love the fact that I can very precisely determine how much or how little of my information I want to display (in the Contact section, for example). The personalized display as well as the [ability to add custom] tabs are great."

Of the approach staff members took during beta testing, she wrote: "I see that this project is done in a very straightforward way - here is what we think you wanted, try it out and tell us if you like it."

Thanks, Viktoria. And thanks to all the members who participated in the beta testing. You helped to build an improved profile of benefit to all. And once again thanks to you, our members, for making these improvements possible.

Please feel free to post your feedback in this thread.

Regards,
Enrique

One possible improvement Apr 20, 2006

Thanks Enrique.

I've said in previous threads how much I like some features of the new profile, particularly the availability calendar, map and local time features.

I would like to see a change to the contact tab. I don't really want to post my email address publicly, but would like an "email this person" button within the contact tab. I know there are email icons in the top part of the profile, but I suspect potential clients would click on the contact tab if they wa

I would like to see a change to the contact tab. I don't really want to post my email address publicly, but would like an "email this person" button within the contact tab. I know there are email icons in the top part of the profile, but I suspect potential clients would click on the contact tab if they wanted to get in touch with a translator. I also feel that the contact icons are not as obvious as they were in the old profile design.

Keep up the good work!

Becky.

New profile at old URL Apr 20, 2006

I set it up so that the new format appears at the old URL. It works fine.
However, if I go to My profile via My Proz.com tab, it still goes to the old profile. Is it intended to be like that?

Referral bug Apr 20, 2006

I was just trying to enter a list of referrals. However, when I choose a specialty the resulting entry shows a completely different field of expertise.

Example:
I chose medical (general), while the saved entry showed folklore. When I chose biology, the result was arts (Kunst, Kunsthandwerk; the results appear in German).

A bug?

Profiles available to the public... Apr 20, 2006

Hello all,

The profiles are now live and should be visible to all via the www.proz.com/profile links as Enrique described. If you wish for visitors to see this new format when they visit http://www.proz.com/pro/youruserid , please click the "Use this profile format as default" at the top of your own profile page (in the new format).

Hi Walter,

However, if I go to My profile via My Proz.com tab, it still goes to the old profile. Is it intended to be like that?

No it is not I have fixed this. Thanks for repoting it!

Hi Sonja,

I will look into the referral problem ASAP.

Thanks!

Best Regards,
Justin

Calender Apr 20, 2006

There are 4 abbreviations
available (A); partially available (P); not available (N)

and what does NR mean. Maybe it was already there formerly, but I do not remember the meaning.

Local time is incorrect Apr 20, 2006

I love many features about the new profile format, but I just noticed that the local time for the Netherlands is listed as being 2 hours earlier than it is in reality, and I don't seem to be able to fix it myself (being able to fix time yourself would indeed be handy for a translator ). Can this be fixed?

Thanks!

Could we have a dividing line between the About me and KudoZ Activity/Project History part? Apr 20, 2006

I think they are not separated clearly enough.
Please, Justin

profile title Apr 21, 2006

Hi all,

As far as I can judge up to now, this new profile seems great. A great thanks for all the good work to all who worked on it!

However, there's one single thing I find very annoying indeed: when I click on the links to see my profile in the new format, it opens up with the top header:
English to French translation. Translation services in Cinema, Film, TV.

I do (did, actually) some cinema/TV subtitling, but I am mainly a medical translator. It

I do (did, actually) some cinema/TV subtitling, but I am mainly a medical translator. It becomes clear when one reads the profile, but isn't the title the 1st thing anybody would see?

I wonder if any other translator has the same problem? Can you please tell me how I can change this heading?

Thanks again.

My tagline doesn't appear on top of the page Apr 21, 2006

Instead, someone has edited some of the profile content and put it into the headline.

In all, I like the new design. It is clearly laid out and offers a good overview of all areas of interest.

Yes, that's what I mean. I wouln't mind if I could agree with the edited text, which I don't. What about you?

Wow, it's fantastic! Apr 21, 2006

I missed the announcement of any change and only discovered this through the latest Quick Poll, but I think it's great! However, I notice the same problem with the local time -- it is 2 hours off for Germany, as well. Thanks for the great work!
