Description
Medical translation is not just a question of technical language, terminology and specialised knowledge. As in other areas of translation, nuances and issues of linguistic non-correspondence and "untranslatables" also appear. In this webinar, we will identify distinctions in terminology between different languages. Is an "illness" the same as a "disease", "disorder" or "sickness"? What about common medical jargon, idioms and euphemisms (e.g. "mental health", "pins and needles", etc.)? Then, of course, there are the various departments, units, wards and teams that are specific to certain languages, locales, countries or regions. We will take a look at the variety of linguistic challenges and issues and develop guidelines to confront and manager these thorns in the translator's side.

At the end of this sessions, participants will be able:

- To understand the moods and gradations of "untranslatable" terminology
- To identify strategies to translate infrastructure- and insurance-related terms that do not match across the source and target texts
- To develop a systematic approach to circumnavigate non-correspondence of terms
