Summary:Scanned pages, PDF files or badly prepared .doc files do not need to be that troublesome any more. Join us and learn how to prepare them for translation either in CAT tool or as they are — saving time and senses :-).
Description
We often get documents which are scanned pages, PDF files or badly prepared .doc files. Here you can learn to prepare them for translation either in CAT tool or as they are — saving time and senses :).

The point of this course is to provide you with tips that will help you reduce amount of time required to prepare document for translation and to deliver good-looking and clear document to a customer. Most of the tips presented in this course are based on software that you already have so that you could use them immediately. Moreover, majority of functionalities included here can be configured within a few minutes and saved for further multiple use.

Whether you use CAT tools or not you will not only learn how to configure functionalities mentioned during the course but also how to create your own ones.

The content of this course refers only to simple (but rarely used) functions offered by the well-known software and does not require advanced knowledge (e.g. regular expressions, html source code). Therefore, it is suitable even for those translators who do not feel well in dealing with computers.

Training program:

OCR
1. The idea of OCR software and basic functionalities of OCR software (here Abby FineReader and Adobe Creative Suite).
2. Custom functionalities of OCR software that save a lot of time: converting drawing descriptions directly to tables, converting tables or only selected parts of pages.
3. Removing hidden remains of OCR conversion.

MS WORD
1. Using macros for quick insertion of pictures from PDF or image files and for cleaning document after OCR conversion.
2. Other suggested uses of macros.
3. Using hiding styles instead of hiding function (why and how).
4. Using styles for preparing indexes, tables of contents, drawings, tables and for reviewing layout.
5. Using automatic sources for "automatic translation" of commonly used phrases, titles, norms etc.
6. Power of text fields! How to skip time consuming layout arrangements by use of text fields?
7. Using key terms glossaries prepared in Excel in Word half-automatically.
8. Processing drawings in Word or with free and easily accessible tools.
9. Managing repetitions without CAT tools.

OCR for Greek Apr 2, 2014

Hello Anna,

Does the software you use in your presentation apply to Greek characters? I often find that the recognition rate for Greek texts is not very high. Thank you.

A littleicon_smile.gif. The main purpose here will be to show how to obtain editable version of image or pfd document and how to save some parts of documents for further use with preserved graphics and layout.

Hello,
the most recent version of Abby FineReader supports Greek, there is also a separate patch for this language BUT I cannot tell you whether it works properly because I do not understand a single word in Greek so I'm not sure whether it spoils text or not. It would be a good idea to check out the trial.

Great class, but it should be 2 hours long.Apr 8, 2014

I am happy I took this class. Thank you for putting it together, Ana! What a great idea to save some text to Excel and then sort, and also I did not know what macros were before. My suggestion is that the class be 2 hours long, not just one, and that you take that first document with the strange image and process it from start to finish in the first hour, and spend the second hour on the macros and uploading the document into the CAT. It was a lot of information for just one hour.
