Good morning everybody,

I was just wondering if anybody could recommend any good books for getting to grips with English legalese. Given that so many people work as translators of legal documents and not all of them have studied or worked as lawyers, I'm assuming there must be some good texts which they have used to get to grips with formalities and styles and so on. Can anybody help me find such a book?

an interesting topic Jan 16, 2013

Thanks for opening this thread, Michael.

@Daniela: This sounds like a good book, very comprehensive.

In the description it says:

"The scope of the book makes it useful as a reference source to anyone with a background in any of the languages used in the book."

Could you maybe let us know which languages are being covered in the book. Thanks a lot in advance.

Manuela

You will find plenty of material there - if you translate contracts, which is likely, you will find templates for specific types of contrats. Just google the type you want - e.g., "Sales Agreement" and you will see. For specific legal fields, type the field or some keywords into your Google - e.g., "arbitration", "patent law"... In some fields, there is an agency responsible for the topic, and you will find material on its website - e.g., IRS for taxes, FDA or EMEA for pharma regulatory document... See more

And EurLex is a wonderful tool - it contains EU legal texts in all fields, in all the EU languages (the legalese used there may be a little different from UK or US English, though), but you will find the equivalent of any legal notion - just do the search in there in Spanish (if I remember your pair right) and then switch to English.Collapse
