Dear colleagues,

Just for information, for those interested:

The technical language of medicine can sound pretty obscure at a first glance: words like electrocardiography and echocardiography can look pretty alike and might sound confusing.

In medical translation, precision and utmost attention to terminology is a must. This webinar is designed to provide participants with a good grasp on English medical terminology based on the morphology of medical terms – i.e. how medical terms are created.

In an hour, we will go through the most common Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology and you will learn how to recognise these elements and use them to decode medical terms effectively and precisely.

More info here

Have a great day!
Anne

Very useful webinar Apr 19, 2013

I am often amazed how many basic errors are made regarding standard medical terminology. Knowing and understanding where the words come form, their prefixes and suffixes already helps a lot. At least it helpe me and thousands of medical students when studying medicine.

This webinar is highly recommended to all translators who already are working in the medical field or plan to enter it.

Declaring interest? Apr 19, 2013

For some time I've had a feeling that you and Anne have some kind of business connection/partnership. Clicking through from Anne's link to this webinar appears to confirmed this.

The webinar is hosted on on a site/portal called alexandria-library which states that it is "A project by GxP Language Services". Although, neither the portal nor the GxP site offers any info about who is behind the portal/site, both you and Anne name GxP in your profiles here on ProZ.

Do you

Do you not think this might be an interest you should declare when bumping up Anne's thread and recommending the webinar?

Where do you see the problem? Apr 19, 2013

I was not bumping up Anne's thread, what I did was to point again to a webinar given by a presenter who knows her stuff (neither me nor Anne), so where is your problem when I am promoting an event I find useful? Does it interfere with your business, am I stealing your screen space or time? Just curious?

By the way, You will find my name very clearly on the GxP Language Services site were it belongs: http://gxplanguageservices.com/archives/263

And on the Alexandria Project page too, see here (bottom of the page) http://alexandria-library.com/

I don't see either where you might see a problem here.

Don't you think that there are really more important problems for the time being? (if you have doubts about that, just watch CNN right now)

About the medical terminology, I am always amazed when I have to edit some medical translations and see that some of our colleagues can make terrible mistakes that certainly they would not do if they had the basic etymological clues they should have. Greek and Latin are the basis of the construction of most medical terms and, as those said "dead" languages are no longer taught in most schools, even in Europe, younger colleagues are feeling completely lost in front of words that older ones (as I am) will understand at first glance.

I think that if a webinar is able to show them, for instance, that all words begining with the prefix "eu" will refer to a normal, regular situation, or that words ending with "ase" are mandatorily referring to enzymes, or when ending with "ate" are necessarily a salt, etc. those colleagues will save time, improve their work quality, hence their reputation, and hence again will earn more money.

Let me add that I have absolutely no relationship with GxP (don't even work for them) and that, as a lot of us, "only" know Anne as a very talented and skilled colleague. No interest involved in my message .
Have a nice day
Catherine

Well, if you visit my proz profile you'll se that GxP Language Services is my employer. It's even clearer on Siegfried proz's profile, in the standardized information category, there's a field "Employees" and my name appears there. I hope this clarifies

Since I see you do not specialize nor work in the medical field, I suppose that you're interested in this subject of specialization (otherwise you would not follow the medical forum), so feel free to ask us (us as in all medical translators in this forum) if you need anything, we'd gladly help or point you to good resources in the matter.

Have a great weekend,
Anne

Slight problem Apr 19, 2013

That is a pretty testy response, considering you don't see a problem... The problem, by the way, is that you're not only promoting an event you find useful, you're also promoting an event that you benefit from financially, since it is an event organized by your company.

True, but the clean approach would have been to state those various connections up front.

One thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other! You don't have to stop acting professionally just because there are horrible things going on in this world, you know. Or else nobody would ever have to bother.

Yes, we decided to set up a platform for CPD for translators and for colleagues who want to share their knowledge.

True, but the clean approach would have been to state those various connections up front.

Oh, we do have other connections too, e.g. our Alexandria Twitter account https://twitter.com/Alexandria_xl8

and you might not believe it, we are promoting events and CPD activities from all kind of sources

or have a look here at our Twitter account on Translation jobs https://twitter.com/Translate_Jobs

Not everything we do, has a "financial" objective. Yes, we charge for some of the webinars on Alexandria, there are also free webinars and there are webinars where the money goes to charity. And you won't believe it, a webinar platform costs money, a website costs money and my employees providing the information and maintaining it cost money. But I want to contribute and share and create things.

So if you want to contribute and share something - great, get in contact and let's do something together.

Thank you Cetacea. It appears you have the same view re. ethical marketing as I do.

I'm fully aware of what has happened in the world during the week. There have also been a few other interesting news stories in "my" countries – UK and Sweden. Does that mean I should ignore anything else that happens? BTW, I prefer the BBC.

If I have a "problem", your term, it is with un-ethical marketing. If we are selling something, we should be upfront with who the actual seller is. The prospects should not have to click through various websites/profiles to find this information.

Why should a prospect have to click through pages on various websites in order to find this out?

I do not "follow" the medical forum. When I need to "disconnect" from whatever I'm working on, I often go to the ProZ forum page and click on current threads. This does not mean I have a particular interest in any subject area. However, should I decide to add medicine as a specialisation, highly unlikely, I will consider accepting your offer.

Edited to conform with ProZ's rule #1.

Having spent the last 7+ years as translator/content writer as well as marketing manager for a company with high-maintenence websites and regular webinars in 10 languages, I am fully aware of the costs involved. And I also understand the financial benefits, both direct and indirect.

Wherever we promoted these webinars - own sites, partner sites, other affiliates, email marketing, etc - we had no problem clearly stating our involvement.

Difficult to judge the connections and motives of somebody who presents him-/herself behind an alias on this platform.

As long as you think any mention/promotion is good, I'm happy to have helped you.

I will now retreat from this thread until the moderator who hid my earlier post (not a moderator of this particular forum) explains how that post breached rule #1. I guess it might have something to do with Catherine's post asking me to concern myself with more important issues and me responding that I was fully aware of current news.

------

Whilst writing this I have received an answer from the moderator who hid my post indicating that Catherine's reference to current news events was OK, but me actually mentioning the events she might be referring was wrong. I will now edit my post in accordance with the moderator's wishes.

I am really sorry to hear that you were "moderated". I actually think that the kind of lively discussion we have here is something very useful. Don't think that your comment regarding our not too obvious involvement in the Alexandria platform went unnoticed. We have nothing to hide and we really have not started the Alexandria project to make tons of money with it.
I'll think about how we can make our involvment clearer in the future. The point is just that when you start something it is easy to believe that everybody knows that it is your project.

And I would really love to see that Proz would go easier on "moderating" the fora.
