And the funny thing is that I don't use the Desktop at all. Apart from the background image, my Desktop is a sort of post-nuclear landfill.
I have a collapsible bar (Apple type) on top of my screen where I start programs from. Copernic to find files and the Windows Explorer to manage them. I never actually have to peel my screen down to the Desktop.

There are about 30 icons on my desktop. I only regularly use about a third of them. But it's not an issue.
There you go - I've just deleted three that I rarely or never use - is that better for you?

I rarely see my desktop because I have so many files open at once, but the most important shortcuts are in the bottom tray. I'd have more, but they won't fit (i.e., they go into hiding and I have to remember to look for them).

Then there are short cuts to Invoicing, my collections of terminology and abbreviations, CAT tool and database and so on...
Plus a private department with whatever I collect along the way, and a few family pictures for inspiration.
It drives me up the wall when Windows periodically arranges them - it has simply no idea of how they go logically in clusters and groups. I disable everything I can, but smart computers are just TOO smart for me!

But I never thought that was a lot.
I haven't placed all on purpose, some seem to have found their own way to my desktop.
- And if it is an app I use, even occasionally, I'll just leave them.
BTW: I use 3 monitors, and the icons are only on one of them.

The Windows recycle bin. I don't think it can be removed from the desktop.
And a "wallpaper" image showing one of my two neighbours Willi and Willi, but I'm not sure which of the two it is (look closely):

After using Mac, I used to play a little with an eye-candy Mac-like interface (UIXstyle + RocketDock + FolderChanger, etc) and several virtual desktops, but now I'm satisfied with a free tiny WinRoll for rolling up/down and windows transparency, plus a free tiny Everything for spotifying necessary files quickly.
I don't think it can be removed from the desktop Why, Recycle Bin can be easily renamed or removed via a few clicks from the Desktop)

I'd like to have less... or none at all. For a while, I had none, with a folder fixed in the start-up tab with the main ones. But I found it's more practical to have the frequently used ones in the desktop. After all, Windows has that feature for a reason, and that reason is way more important than aesthetics, for sure.

You can remove the recycle bin as well. In the control panel, there is a config where you chose which icons are visible or not, including the bin.
And by the way, that's Willi. I know them, too.

Yes, finding an old link after Windows has rearranged the desktop a few times can be tiresome. Since Windows 7, Windows doesn't even handle windows properly any more - they pop up at all kinds of odd positions on the screen.
And now and again, Firefox shuffles all the bookmarks on my toolbar ...
Sigh. | | |
