No time to feel lonely with emails and telephone calls constantly coming in. | | | Other (not any more) | Apr 30, 2019 |
I worked for 20 years in Brussels as in-house translator and we had not only an excellent working environment but we just made up a fun, friendly and enjoyable team. It was a pleasure working with them and of course sometimes I miss the camaraderie. Now they are an email away, but it’s not the same thing!

P.S. I’m a widow and I've been living alone since my last daughter left “the nest” some 20 years ago. I've become very used to my own company and lonely is not a word in my vocabulary! ▲ Collapse | | | Ricki Farn Đức Local time: 07:17 English to German
I don't even know how to feel lonely as a freelancer. I occasionally feel lonely as a person (the last time when I thought Willi and Willi the backyard mice weren't sitting in the stack of logs - it turned out they were, and were just being real quiet*). But as a freelancer?
*German word of the day: "mucksmäuschenstill" - no-tiniest-sound-mousie-quiet

I chose to be (was able to finally become) a freelancer 40 years ago this year. I have never regretted my decision. Being my own "boss" is great, I only work for clients I like, who pay the rates I expect and/or who help me expand into other areas of translation or learn new skills (CAT, etc.).
I couldn't live on my own without feeling lonely, but I much prefer to work alone. | | | Co-working? No thanks. | Apr 30, 2019 |
Many translators swear by co-working. To me it would be a sheer nightmare. Far too much noise and movement.
I spend my working life these days communicating with not only clients but colleagues around the world.
But it’s nice to be able to shut the lid. | | | neilmac Tây Ban Nha Local time: 07:17 Spanish to English + ...
I mostly prefer working on my own. However, sometimes I feel the need to brainstorm friends or colleagues about certain things, which is where the kudoz section comes in handy.
However, there are some divas who insist in re-categorizing my queries as NON-PRO due to their seeming simplicity, which really bums me out. With "friends" like these, I'd rather be alone.

My husband works at home too, but he's never available to speak during the day. We communicate via Skype, which our son finds quite disturbing. | | | | Axelle H. Pháp Local time: 07:17 Thành viên kể từ 2017 English to French

Did you read my thoughts ?
When I started my translator career in early 2010, I went to work as a translation agency as a trainee, it was a conversation I could not concentrate on what I was working on, today I feel a tranquility and a lot of energy to translate.

Alone at home I certainly would feel lonely and uninspired;

Pro = difficult term, needs research and/or thought
Non-pro = easy term, a term or phrase anyone fluent in both languages would know immediately, without looking it up
The pro and non-pro refers to the terms/question, NOT the person asking. No need to take it personally. Not knowing something is not a crime. And not asking would be just plain silly. Kudoz is there to help out. | | | Susanna Martoni Ý Local time: 07:17 Thành viên kể từ 2009 Spanish to Italian + ... An ideal solution? | Apr 30, 2019 |
I am in a co-working, but in a very large office, with a colleague working in a separated office with a door. The remaining space is "mine".
Seventh floor, panoramic view, silence, my daugher stays at home and I can work on my own.
