Vacation? I take quite often a few days off here and there between jobs. It all adds up probably to more than 4 weeks a year, but I’m not counting!

But I always take my work with me and work around the holiday. My family is used to that and it goes hand in hand.
As soon as the mortgage is paid in about 5 years and I do not have any other obligations, I am going oh holiday without work for 6 weeks! Something to look forward to☺
roughly 30 + roughly 10 public holidays | Jun 3, 2019 |
I have young children and my wife is a salaried employee, so even if I wanted to take less time off, it wouldn't make any sense unless it was genuinely unavoidable.
That said, I am honest enough to say ROUGHLY 30+10: I still check my e-mails at least every few days and, while I generally do zero actual translation work, I occasionally do something very small and sometimes end up having to correct the proofs for smaller projects during my vacation or deal with questions/changes relat... That said, I am honest enough to say ROUGHLY 30+10: I still check my e-mails at least every few days and, while I generally do zero actual translation work, I occasionally do something very small and sometimes end up having to correct the proofs for smaller projects during my vacation or deal with questions/changes related to prior projects.
I also have to plan my vacation around some recurring projects. And all of this is also a relatively new development that only became possible a few years ago (six or seven years into being a self-employed translator). ▲ Collapse

I took ten days off in March. We'll be chilling this summer by the sea, I'll take my laptop just for my direct clients. Hoping to visit two different sets of friends each for a week or so. I'll stop work for Christmas too, stopping in time to not go over the limit at which I'd have to start paying VAT, because that rather frightens me.

Certainly more than 14 as I have already planned 12 and have already taken two weeks off this year.
14+ is leading at the moment - I will be interested to see what happens once our US and then Asian colleagues start replying.

I'll be going back to Scotland for two weeks in July, to look after my old mum while my daughter is on holiday in Canada. However, if I happen to have any translation or revision work to do while I'm there, I'll do it. Otherwise, I'd probably get bored.

I only took 3 days vacation this Spring and don't have any other holidays planned for the remainder of the year. Normally, I would take more, but this year I consider it imprudent to be making travel plans in light of the considerable uncertainty still surrounding Brexit.

Does that mean you don't see the need for holidays? Genuine question – no hidden agenda!

I agree, 0 is a more valid option here. I find it funny how often these polls have "Other - N/A" or "I don't know" as an option, sometimes even both in the same poll!
I think, if the question doesn't apply to you, just don't answer the poll. You can still see the results if you're interested.

One week in winter and two during the summer. To me, vacation is no work at all; I tell my clients I'll be away and switch off completely, I do not even check e-mails or anything. As I see it, that is the only way to rest from my everyday routine.

At this point it will definitely be three weeks. However, they can easily turn into four or even five weeks.
About 9+ weeks | Jun 3, 2019 |
I actually cannot imagine working throughout a year without ever stopping... A free weekend is about slowing down so speaking of holidays, I need more days to relax. I have had four weeks off already (meaning completely Out-of-Office, without a computer) this year, planning for another 3,5 weeks during summer, one week in autumn and two weeks during the Christmas - New Year period (one week falls in 2020).
