Right now, I prefer not to communicate at all ... Dec 13, 2019

since it's been crazy busy everywhere and I'd rather just lock myself into my bedroom and enjoy some sodding PEACE AND QUIET, thank you very much!

Generally speaking though, I couldn't care less which of my languages is being used.

It depends on who with or what for. When writing in my source language, I need to take greater care to avoid mistakes and "sounding foreign", whereas when speaking I can usually rattle away fluently at bilingual level.

Writing Dec 13, 2019

My source languages are English, French, Italian and Spanish. I prefer communicating with my customers by e-mail whatever the language (I must say though that my Italian and Spanish are rather rusty) as it's always good, for both parties, to have everything in writing. I can’t remember the last time a client phoned me…

Not much choice Dec 13, 2019

I live immersed in my main source language, and I speak and write it fluently. I don't always have a choice!

I am equally happy speaking or writing the language, functionally as well as most natives, though not up to professional standards. I know where to look things up, if I need to, in the official Retskrivningsordbogen from the Danish language Council, or I know the rules already!

I hear idioms and know special turns of phrase from literature and current affairs, and as a language geek I am conscious of them and play with them as many others don´t - languages are not taught and studied in schools as they used to be!

can not have preference Dec 13, 2019

I am living in a foreign country with my French husband who does not speak Chinese. In fact, nowadays I seldom have the chance to use my target language outside of work.

It depends Dec 13, 2019

If we're talking about communicating with clients, it always has to be in writing for me.

In general communication, I prefer to speak my source languages than write them. When I speak, if I make a mistake, no one pays much attention, but in writing it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I prefer written communication in both my source language and my native language. Writing allows me to go back and correct errors. That isn't possible in spoken communication.

Whatever Dec 13, 2019

99% of my communications are written, usually by email. At home I have no need to communicate in my second and third languages - but I work at home, so I don't communicate in these languages at all. Oral communication, for me, is basically talking to myself... I've been wanting to change it, though.

Mode of communication is immaterial, as long as you make your point clear. Dec 13, 2019

I think, if you have enough mastery in language, speaking or writing comes naturally. Speaking, of course, can be informal and has got its own advantage in casual exchanges.

I'm most confident communicating in writing, whether in my source or target/native languages. There's a reason I'm a translator and not an interpreter!
