Translation is my only business. I used to help my younger daughter with her catering business but she had an offer she couldn’t refuse and has been working in Cancun for 2 years…

Technically, yes, although I wouldn't call it "business". Just a couple of other jobs I've only been doing occasionally or not at all yet.
I have also thought about it, but have been too busy to actually do something. That could still change in future.

Diversification is limited to renting two small flats, which we bought after making an insane profit selling our main home to change countries. It definitely helps not to worry about the children's higher studies away from home.

My "main business" is being a pensioner. This makes translation, creative writing, and tutoring my other "businesses", if you wish.

Bread Aug 28, 2020

When the pandemic and distancing started, my wife couldn't carry on with her normal work as a massage therapist and beautician, so she started making bread in our little oven at home. A neighbour smelled it and asked to buy some...

Delicious, and it's flying out the door now, just in our building and the local neighbourhood.

I've been helping her put together a formula spreadsheet like the ones I use to manage some of my bigger translation projects,
so she can keep track of income & outgoings, and I also double as a delivery boy sometimes.

It's been really refreshing. We're definitely on a roll............(sorry, couldn't resist)

Not now, but yes in the past and yes in the future Aug 28, 2020

Right now, translation is my sole work. Until just over a month ago, I was still an engineer during the day, so that really made translation the "side business" at the time. I'm also in school right now to become a Physical Therapist's Assistant and plan to do that part time, although the primary goal with that is to open up certain parts medical translation and interpretation as a possibility.

Not really Aug 28, 2020

I'm still doing some software development, working on old projects of my former employer, but this is fading out and you could not really call it a side business at this time.

Can't afford it Aug 28, 2020

The situation of the translation market is very, very bad. For this reason, there is no way I can consider a side business. I have thought about it though. My main project is to launch a book, but there again we need money to hire a publisher and, in any case, there is no point officially launching a book in the pandemic, because of the isolation rules which are still very strict here (despite the opening of shops). Thought of selling cosmetics but the rate of return is extremely low.

Very occasionally Aug 28, 2020

I have been working as an extra on film sets on a handful of occasions over the past couple of years. Usually involving going off to some (remote) location, being amongst lots of other people, and lots of standing around, it is a perfect counter to our normal working days. Of course now, during the pandemic, this work has screeched to a halt.

Yes Aug 28, 2020

I work as a mountain bike guide

It pays about a tenth of what translation does but it's a nice antidote to sitting in the office

Today, I turned out to be a tender consultant but usually: no, I don't.

I happened to work occasionally as a furniture restorer Aug 28, 2020

for my own needs but also against payment for acquaintances. It didn't pay anything, so I wouldn't call it a side business, would it not be for the involvement, but I enjoyed it very much. The satisfaction to bring back to life old furniture is unbelievable! Now unfortunately there isn't any more furniture around that I know of that needs to be restored.
