I like to think my (direct) clients would know better. This sounds like something an agency might propose, to try and scrape even more earnings away from their translation "resources"…

They haven’t! As I said before I don't see what application it could have as one of the reasons I’m still translating at my age is to keep my brain working and learning new things…

Teresa, I reckon it can be useful for some people. Typically, engineers who are good at technical stuff but not good at explaining may be able to write more clearly with this technology. It then follows that technical translators who are good at translating technical terminology but not very strong on formulating elegant prose (which was the case for far too many technical translators I tried out when managing project at the agency) might well use it to turn their word-for-word translation into something that sounds more natural.
I tried it out the other day, while experimenting with iambic pentameter to translate a medieval poem. It did a fair job of converting my modern prose into a poem that sounded like it might have been written by Chaucer, but I really wasn't sure I could trust ChatGPT to produce something truly authentic. Listening to recitals of the Canterbury tales on YouTube proved far more helpful in giving me an idea of what was needed. So I ended up rewriting most of it, to the point that the translation I delivered had maybe two half-lines lifted from ChatGPT's effort. I'm pretty sure I could have managed without it, but I had some fun in the process and satisfied my curiosity at the same time. ▲ Collapse

Not sure about how future goes but whenever the GPT takes over the industry, I am sure we will no longer see paying memeber of ProZ (and GPT won't pay ProZ either for sure!)
A free platform will be more than enough if there is constant scarcity of work, and soon the server cost and ProZ staff human cost will be way unaffordable.
We should prepare to say goodbye to each other. Nice talking to you all.

... I do regular editing work for a medical journal and I asked them if their Editorial Board had formulated any policy for dealing with submitted articles written with the assistance of large language model AIs.
So far I haven't received any response.

Does ProZ have standards at all? I mean, they accept clients with ridiculous rates of around 2 cents per word, so why should they be any better when it comes to this type of requests?

I sense a lot of suspicion here at ProZ about all kinds of advances in machine-assisted work. And to be honest, I don't understand this. We have readily accepted heaps of other kinds of developments, even just in recent years. Progress will continue, no matter what we do. Even Elon Musk couldn't stop the development of AI chat robots! If we as professional translators continue to be scared of using new developments or accepting that they will have an increasing role to play, we are doomed. We don't have to use any kind of AI or CAT tool or other tools if we don't want to. But to pretend that they don't exist and ridicule them and those who choose to adapt to new technology, is just burying our heads in the sand.
AI is here. CAT tools are here. Machine translation is here. Get over it, and choose your own path, but don't pretend it will all go away if you scold it or mock it enough. It won't. ▲ Collapse

This is true, but the danger is that people will go too far in the other direction, believing that the capabilities of these new AIs are greater than they are, just because they talk impressively. ChatGPT projects the same sense of confidence and reliability when it's saying something that's totally wrong as it does when it's saying something that's right. Just like some people.
I use these new tools, but I don't trust them. Just like I use Word's spell checker, but I don't trust it. It's good for certain things, but not for others. Same for MT. Same for ChatGPT. That's not being scared, just prudent.

Technology is the new religion. People have still not learned from the Titanic, the Hindenburg, or Fukushima that blind belief in the forward march of technology has tragic consequences. Much of the discussion about ChatGPT is about how harmful it is - not specifically for translation but for everyone. But that won't stop the believers from believing and putting down everyone else as Luddites. How long will it be until ChatGPT or some other manifestation of AI causes a terrible accident?

I don't pretend CAT tools don't exist but I find it difficult to translate most texts if they're divided into segments. I also find MTPE time-consuming as I have to make sure all the proper names and specific terms (in my case mainly related to culture and tourism) have been properly translated, and I tend to miss mistakes.
I want the machine to adapt to me, not the other way around.
