No.
As long as there's enough standard and offline, MT-plugin-agnostic, CAT-aided translation work out there, I feel no need to offer PEMT services from the onset to prospective agencies.

Yes.
I don't "offer" as such, but... Incumbent agencies do ask me PEMT services now and again (paid per hour) and I oblige.
I feel like a cow with BSE trying to watch trains pass doing it, but PEMT accounts for 1% of my yearly turnover.

Agencies that are loyal and give me recurring work (translation proper) know they can ask me anything, from editing and PEMT services to assessments and damage control. I can even cook dinner as well if required.

I don’t offer PEMT as a service. Let’s start by saying that I don’t enjoy editing or proofreading other’s work as much as enjoy translating and so what I feel about PEMT is tainted from the very beginning. Anyway, very recently I did accept a big PEMT job IT-PT. I must say I was surprised by the general quality although (inevitably?) some parts were filled with mistakes…

But I don't enjoy it. Just doing it for the money. Things stand differently when it comes to translation, which I love.

No, I don't. And I won't.

My response, when asked, is something like: "I find it easier to translate from good Italian than from bad English". The client normally understands when I explain it like this.

If necessary, I tell them that I'm perfectly capable of using Google Translate or DeepL if I want to. I might put the result through ChatGPT to see if it can come up with ideas, and I check each word against my glossaries (thirty years in the making with a thesaurus fo

If necessary, I tell them that I'm perfectly capable of using Google Translate or DeepL if I want to. I might put the result through ChatGPT to see if it can come up with ideas, and I check each word against my glossaries (thirty years in the making with a thesaurus for thousands and thousands of words) to see if they can help. But I always start from the Italian, not from a bad, sometimes even incomprehensible and at times mistaken translation.

What would be the point of working from a bad original when you can have a perfectly good one? It would be confusing and time-consuming, and it would almost certainly lead to a text of inferior quality.

Did not want to a couple of years ago because the quality was rock bottom. In the mean time however, the quality is getting better. The share is about 20% in my case and as long as the quality is not that bad, I have no problem with it.

Yes, but I charge a normal translation rate for it.

Also, whenever a client requests PEMT, I ask them specifically if they want me to deviate as little as possible from the machine translator, whether I'm allowed to deviate from the machine translation for preferential edits, and/or if they want me to produce a human-like translation -- I can do all three, but I need to know in advance.

Absolutely not. It's horrible work that gives no job satisfaction (and takes just as much time and effort as translating from scratch).

Yes, but... Sep 3, 2023

just for projects with dedicated MT engines that are trained
only with related material = how MT should actually be used
.
This way, you get very good output that usually requires little editing.
Of course this means the content is not of creative but rather repetitive nature.
When working on such projects, my output is higher than with regular translation.

And I don't see any problem in offering it as a service as long as we set our own rates.
After all, it is one of the services provided in translation industry. It's your choice: you use it or not.
PEMT can be useful. For example, right now I am translating a document with a long list of countries, weekdays and dates.
In this case, it can speed up my work while allowing me more time to improve the rest of my translation.
