Not sure Jun 30

Work has been extremely irregular for a while (worst than during the Covid years) but I have no idea if AI is to blame or not. I’d risk saying that the current situation is a sum of several elements that create a “perfect storm”: the socio-economic tensions, the growing electoral appeal of the extreme-right in Europe, the political instability that we see around the world, the Russo-Ukrainian and the Palestinian-Israeli wars, etc. I have no interest whatsoever in AI and a growing number of... It has had a negative effect, but... (there's a big but) Jun 30

I don't think it has had a positive effect on my income, but I do think it helps keep income coming in. AI-based editing (not translation, which I don't use) sometimes helps me find a better word or turn of phrase, which means my clients get a better product.

I finish my text, then run it through an AI editing machine and see if I can or need to change something. It's an additional step, so it costs me money - in the form of time, which is often wasted - but it quite often improve

Higher quality doesn't earn me more money, but it does earn me more jobs.

Well, I can't say how much it has affected my income, but it has definitely changed the way jobs are carried out (and paid).

The old-school was:
Human Translation + check
Editing
Delivery

and these steps had a proper (usually) rate.

Now we have
Machine translation
Human check (paid less than a human translation)
Editing (paid less than in the past)

Result?

Translations are basically very similar (as to style), human intervention is minimized (less money = less work done).

Translator accept more jobs and they invest less time on each job, overall quality is much lower and you struggle to have a decent income.

No Jul 1

Until now I have been able to maintain my desired income level. Key words, for my personal situation: adaptation and continuous quality.

Yes, it’s increased Jul 1

I had a panic last year during a quiet patch so I hiked my prices to compensate and then work picked up again. Ker-ching.

My gut feeling is that while the big agencies are staking everything on MT, direct clients are increasingly understanding the limitations of AI and rediscovering what a professional human writer can bring.

No way of knowing Jul 1

To know the answer to this, you would have to know the number of jobs you did not get due to AI. Nobody can know this.

I don't think so... Jul 1

and even my more "modern" client (a videogame company) continues to send me regular work like before. I honestly cannot feel any loss of work due to AI, not so far anyway. And the more I hear (inadvertently) about AI, the more I abhor it!

I think I am going from "early adopter of all things digital" in the late 80's, early 90's to someone who is happy using (and determined to use) old(er) versions of software in my work for as long as I find workarounds... It's quite fun, actually!

How exactly is "the growing electoral appeal of the extreme-right in Europe" resulting in extremely irregular work for you or anone else? I don't see the connection.
