VAT is paid on every purchase we make, the standard rate is 23%, but it varies:
Foodstuff: 6% and 13%
Water supplies: 13%
Pharmaceutical products: 6%
Books: 6%

Relevant for book translators' revenues: the Dutch government is planning to raise the VAT on books, newspapers and magazines from 9% to 21% as of 2016. This is widely seen as targeting the cultural elite for political reasons, and the Senate might not approve the plan. The latest news is that the government refuses to split this proposal from the general tax plan for 2025.

This is widely seen as targeting the cultural elite for political reasons, and the Senate might not approve the plan. The latest news is that the government refuses to split this proposal from the general tax plan for 2025.

Writing itself as a service remains exempt from VAT here, and education too. Which is nice, but leads to complications for accounting when part of your work is exempt. This should also be distinguished from a 0% rate.

For my own translation work, I could request an exemption on charging VAT as a small freelancer, but it's better for me to stay in the VAT system, since I have few local clients but mostly local costs.

Fun fact: VAT is also charged on excise duties, which means tax on tax is a substantial part of tobacco and fuel prices in the Netherlands (17 cents per liter for petrol).
