I'd like to, but I don't have enough skills. Translation skills I have and teaching skills I also have, but they do not go together. I have no idea of how to even begin to teach translation or whether in fact it can even be taught.
Unfortunately I'll have to stick to answering Kudoz questions. | | | Niraja Nanjundan (X) Local time: 11:58 German to English
I don't have enough technical skills, but I can think of problem areas in my language pair that I could share and discuss with colleagues.

Am I right in assuming that this is connected to the other Trados training poll you asked a few days ago, Jerzy? If so, the poll question isn't clear enough, as it doesn't mention Trados at all.

I would give a free whole day training to a colleague provided that I have enough time. However, this is a very rare case. | | | Robert Zawadzki (X) Local time: 07:28 English to Polish + ... The answer is more complicated in my case | Jun 2, 2006 |

... because the participants should make some sort of commitment to the event.
The commitment needn't be financial, though: a group of translators could organise a cycle of training days (or sessions on the same day), each led in turn by members of the group.

They say no one really teaches anyone anything. However, some teachers do make it easier for their students to learn ; -)
As far as translation goes, gobbet-based workshops can be very useful if you tailor the material to the group.

but OTOH the reslts are quite interesting
I assume all who have voted "yes I would, if I needn´t to travel" are celar enough about the consequences. This means you would have to organise a venue, pay for it and give the whole day of your work for free. Therefore it wonders me. It wondered me, that so much people would expect someone to give his time for free and on top to organisae everything for free. This is the logical consequence. Both questions are to be seen completly unrelated to other events - like powwows or conferences.
In a nut shell - giving a training is IMO quite different from sharing experience in a discussion way, even two days long discussion. This is a conference like the one in Berlin - and we pay to have this opportunity. However, training would include preparing the stuff, organising the room (where do we get conference rooms for free), organising the equipment (for free?) and devoting the day just to this. I doubt this is something one could expect for free. But nevertheless, I´ll watch and learn.
Best regards

The issue here is not about showing a friend or colleague how to use Trados in an informal setting. If my CAT tool skills were up to scratch, I happily would One reason that they're not is that it's notoriously difficult to find an affordable course, at least here in the UK....
The question at stake is if you were prepared to give training for free in a structured workshop setting, e.g. as part of a powwow. I think the poll didn't make that clear. As Jerzy pointed out the session would last for several hours and would include overhead costs such as travel, room hire etc. At conferences the fee for room hire is already included in the delegate price, so this wouldn't be a major issue. Still, as Jerzy already pointed out, the trainer would have to devote several hours to preparation (those with teaching experience will know that you can't just turn up and start talking...) and teaching, while not being able to network and attend other seminars.
Given these circumstances, would you be still prepared to work for free?
Thanks

I don't have Trados skills to teach (I voted for this), but if I did, I would not do it for free. Giles wrote above some very good reasons why not to do it for free. The first one is commitment from the participants, without paying, there is no commitment.
Best,

I don't have TRADOS, basically because I don't know any representative or translator in my country who uses it and can give some tips on its use.
If this is a TRADOS-related training, maybe you can think of getting some kind of support from the company, at least for lecturers. This would be better than thinking of having professional trainers who only master the basics.

I once gave a seminar on translation what should be translated and what not (addresses, proper nouns, names of companies, numbers, etcetera). These seem to be obvious issues, but are also very confusing. Besides, we also had a seminar on Spanish grammar ("dequeismo", anglicisms, prepositions, language vices). It was very interesting and participants were able to clarify our doubts. ▲ Collapse

I think I would be well enough skilled to give some "lessons". Translating and using CAT-Tools like Trados is my profession and, even if I love my profession, not my leasure time. I weekly have a specified number of working hours and just have to nourish my family within this time. "Would you give Trados lessons for free" sounds for me like clients on phone "It's not very much and it is a very easy document. I would do it myself if I had some minutes ...". I attended a free TRADOS training course of one entire day given by a prozian colleague who owns an agency here in Chile.
TRADOS or any CAT tool for that matter, is seldom taught in translation schools here, at least it was not taught in my school before I graduated three years ago. There was great interest among Chilean translators in learning more about CAT Tools as many of us know that these are often required to get jobs abroad.

So, the topic was very frequent in our local translators forum and this colleague offered a one day training on this tool at his office for all those interested. This occured this summer (January), and there were so many people interested that he gave two workshops instead of only one. He had the infrastructure required, work stations with the software installed and he gave us two saturdays of his time plus precious advice.
I am very grateful to Ricardo Martinez for giving this workshop. He did it for free and I did not pay any money for it, which did not affect my commitment or apreciation for such good deed. It is a great example of solidarity among translators. If I can pay it forward, to the extent of my ability and skills, I'd happily do it.
Thanks again, Ricardo.
Greetings, Stephanie.

This is what makes the difference for me. My office is my room in our home and is something about 11 suare meters large. I cannot imagine to sit in this room with another single person for a longer period of time.
Regarding comitment - this is what happens during powwows or conferences. We make exchange. This is again a difference, as already stated above.
Thanks a lot for your participation
Regards
