My rates have remained the same for my long-standing customers (I am already charging more than a good number of my competitors). Though I’d like to raise my rates for one of them I’m bound by contract and I’ll have to wait until it ends to try to negotiate a new rate. I've been applying either a higher rate or a per project rate to my new clients. | | | Tom in London Vương Quốc Anh Local time: 06:15 Thành viên kể từ 2008 Italian to English I hate having to think up a title every time I post in a forum | Jul 17, 2020 |
My rate has not increased since 01 January 2012, and my clients were happy to pay it. I got lots of work from them.
However during the past 5 years or so some of those clients have started telling me my rate (unchanged) is so high that it's completely impossible.
I know what happened. All you cheapo translators who were willing to let yourselves be beaten down by the agencies until you're now working your a**es off for absurdly low rates.

I still see you asking questions in Kudoz about my specialism (architecture/construction) that you don't understand, taken from texts that you shouldn't be doing. Needless to say, I don't answer your questions and I enjoy watching you select the wrong answers.
Fortunately I have other sources of income, and other good clients.

There is a great deal of price pressure in my main market. I have been asked to lower my rates or conditions have changed in an unfavourable way to me. Needless to say, I have not accepted a lower rate or less favourable conditions. One or two agencies have raised my rates themselves without me asking.

But after July of 2016, I did raise my rates for new clients. And well I should have, because that was when I successfully defended my translation thesis and was awarded an MFA degree.
It doesn't really bother me too much to think that I might have been rejected for a few projects because of my increased rate. I have translated close to 40 books at this point in my career, and I have a guaranteed monthly independent income, anyway. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Over the past year, the rates I charge have: Trados Business Manager Lite | Create customer quotes and invoices from within Trados Studio
